Gilles Simon was not short of words of praise for Novak Djokovic in this tough moment that he had to go through to number one in the world.
The Frenchman stressed that Nole, who is also the chairman of the ATP Players Council, is the only elite player actively working for the interests of lower-ranking players.
The world number 54 believes that the Adria Tour was the perfect excuse for the media to do what they always wanted: to hit Djokovic and weaken him in that role.
While highlighting the Serb’s efforts as president, Simon also noted the lack of commitment, for example, by Roger Federer and emphasized how far the Council went with Djokovic in command as opposed to the Swiss.
It should be remembered that Federer occupied that place from 2008 to 2014 and Simon feels that the 20-time Grand Slams champion did not do enough to preserve the interests of the men’s circuit.
When asked what makes Djokovic different from Federer, the Frenchman said the Serb better understands the situation of lower-ranking players.
