Mattia Binotto, head of the Italian team, assured that the changes in Formula 1 due to the pandemic made them get rid of the German driver.
Contrary to what was thought, Ferrari always had in mind to stay with Sebastian VettelHowever, as explained Mattia Binotto, the changes in the Formula 1 due to the pandemic they made them change their decision.
Speaking to the media, the head of the Italian team commented: “Certainly, we always said during the winter, in private and in public, that he would have been our first option, which I confirm.”
He added: “It is normal for many drivers to ask us during the winter if there was any opportunity to drive for Ferrari, so they have certainly contacted us. That did not change our position, so Seb was our first choice.”
However, the crisis experienced by the world since March, aggravated the situation. “I think the virus and pandemic situation, which changed the whole world, not just our motorsports, our F1. Let’s say the whole situation changed,” said the manager.
Finally, Binotto closed: “And on top of that, the season didn’t start, so there were no opportunities even for Seb to get back on track to demonstrate how much he was really motivated to drive for Ferrari, which was unfortunate for him.”
