Mayer tested positive for COVID a day before boxing's return to Las Vegas

The undefeated American will not be able to fight on Tuesday because she was diagnosed with the disease.

Mikaela Mayer He was preparing to fight for the superlight title in boxing’s long-awaited return to the ring in Las Vegas, scheduled for Tuesday, but a minor obstacle appeared along the way: he tested positive for the coronavirus.

The 29-year-old undefeated American, with a 12-0-0 record (5 KOs) in her career, had her 10-round fight against the Nigerian scheduled Helen Joseph (17-4-2), although it had to be canceled from the card organized by Top Rank at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Nevada.

Despite being asymptomatic, the Californian was diagnosed with the disease and this invalidates her from climbing into the ring this Tuesday, the day the main contest will be starred by the undefeated Shakur Stevenson and the Puerto Rican Felix Caraballo.

“The rest of my team tested negative and everyone is in good health. I really wanted to fight for you again and I am disappointed in myself, my team, my fans and my opponent,” said Mayer.
