When the official calendar received a severe setback when the cancellation of any tournament scheduled in China was known, WTA went further: it moved the tournament from Washington.
It is a new tournament in Kentucky on hard surface, which would replace the Washington one and would be played from August 10 to 16, as a prelude to the tennis weeks in New York City to play the combined Cincinnati and the United States Open.
The idea is that Washington, the headquarters of an ATP 500 in the men’s category starting on the 14th of next month, will not concentrate as many professionals, with the consequent risk of contagion.
On the other hand, the calendar that starts on August 3 in Palermo will be joined the following week by the Prague tournament for players who prefer to prepare for the clay tour.
It should be remembered that the Chinese Government announced this Thursday the cancellation of sports competitions during 2020, including ATP tournaments in Chengdu, Zhuhai, Beijing and Shanghai and WTA tournaments in Beijing, Nanchang, Wuhan, Zhengzhou, the Shenzhen Women’s Masters, the Masters B from Zhuhai and Guangzhou.
