The historic Danish goalkeeper backed the Spaniard and congratulated him before he makes his 400th appearance at Manchester United.
Peter Schmeichel endorsed David De Gea and he said he hopes he stays in Manchester United for many more years. The Spanish will reach the figure of 400 duels with the Red Devils when they go out on the court this Monday against Southampton.
“This team is evolving under Solskjaer and that means David’s role is also changing. If you are a goalkeeper who has been quite busy for years and now you are not busy, you have to change your game a little bit,” Schmeichel told United Review.
“You need to find new ways to stay focused, to stay in the game. We want to fight for the titles and you win them also with undefeated hurdles,” he added.
On the milestone that the Spanish can reach this Monday, he said: “Nine years at Manchester United is a long time and reaching 400 appearances for the club is a great milestone that very few players have achieved. But David still has a long way to go to go, he’s a young boy. He could play here for another 10 years. “
“It has been great to see his development here and it will be very exciting to see him use those experiences to play an important role in United’s future.”
