Following the announcement of the cancellation, several tennis players have applauded Wimbledon’s decision to dedicate £ 10 million to the more than 600 players who would have competed in the London Grand Slam if the pandemic had not occurred.
Thanks to the pandemic insurance that Wimbledon has contracted, part of the collected will be reinvested in the players, who did not take long to celebrate the decision.
“Thank you, it was a huge gesture. You will always be our favorite tournament,” wrote Nick Kyrgios on Twitter, who will receive £ 25,000 for what would have been his participation in the main draw.
Belinda Bencic, number 8 of the WTA, assured that it is an “incredible” gesture and that it means a lot to the players who immediately need the money.
“Incredible news. Always with class events like this and showing yourself a leader in our sport. Well done, Wimbledon, see you next year,” said Belgian Kim Clijsters.
For his part, the Spanish Feliciano López pointed out that it is a magnificent gesture for the players. “We appreciate understanding and generosity in these uncertain times. I take my hat off to you once again,” wrote the tennis player from Toledo, director of the Mutua Madrid Open.
