Honda announced that the 29-year-old Spaniard, 11th in the drivers’ championship in 2019, will compete alongside the current champion for the next two years.
Repsol Honda confirmed the hiring of Pol Espargaró, who in this way will become a teammate of Marc Márquez in the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
The 29-year-old Catalan will leave Red Bull KTM Factory Racing to join the six-time champion of the motorcycling maxim starting next year.
The signature of the Granollers-born means that Marquez’s brother Alex will leave the team in which he has not yet debuted and which will debut this weekend.
After this campaign, the younger brother of the current MotoGP champion will continue with the same company – his extension of the link was announced until 2022 – although he will do so with LCR Honda, replacing Cal Crutchlow.
“Honda Racing Corporation is pleased to announce the signing of Pol Espargaró,” the statement issued by the team said. “The former Moto2 world champion will join the Repsol Honda team with a two-year contract. He will join the eight-time world champion (in all categories), Marc Márquez, aboard the Honda RC213V,” he added.
The 2020 campaign, which was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, begins this weekend with the Spanish Grand Prix.
