Marcelo Bielsa’s team had already secured promotion to the Premier League on Friday after West Brom was defeated 2-1 by Huddersfield Town.
If Brentford won this Saturday, they would have been only three units from Leeds, with a date to dispute (although Leeds will play the game of the date 45 this Sunday against Derby).
However, a first-time goal by Lee Gregory secured Stoke’s victory at bet365 Stadium, then crowning Leeds as champions of the competition.
The result also left Brentford in third place, one point behind West Brom, with just one game to go.
