A professional team from the Pacific Islands has turned into a new fight of interests by New Zealand and Australia.
The relationship between the two reached another color when former All Blacks coach Steve Hansen reopened old injuries and said “we don’t owe them anything” last week.
Rugby Australia President Hamish McLennan says Sydney should be the base for the new team (Pacifika) as there are large communities there from Samoa, Tonga and Fiji, although in New Zealand it is assumed to be located in southern Auckland.
McLennan is also asking that the team’s formation take a year: “Installing them in Auckland would be detrimental to Blues, it would be crazy. I think the idea of including them is brilliant, but in Sydney. And because of COVID, I’m not sure we can guarantee them for next year. Maybe they should be involved from 2022 on. “
