The magazine France Football announced the decision due to the crisis of the new coronavirus that touched the world of soccer.
There will not be Golden Ball in 2020. France Football magazine announced on Monday, through a statement, that the resumption of some competitions, but the suspension of others due to the coronavirus does not allow the election to be fair.
“In exceptional circumstances, exceptional decisions. For the first time in its history, since the beginning of 1956, the France Football Ballon d’Or will not be awarded in 2020, as there are no fair conditions for doing so,” the publication explains.
In this way, there will be no award for which, according to the French magazine, is the best player in the world for the season, a distinction that in the last decade has been a constant battle between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the first with six trophies, the second with five.
Throughout 60 years of history, the French magazine has distinguished the likes of Cruyff, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Di Stefano, Ronaldo Nazario, Figo, Platini, Van Basten, Beckenbauer, George Best, Kopa with the Ballon d’Or. and Luis Suárez among others, while Pelé and Maradona won it honorably, since in their time as players only European footballers were rewarded.
