The three competition proposals that New Zealand presented to Australia

New Zealand media 1News released information on the draft that New Zealand Rugby would have submitted to Rugby Australia on a proposal for a future club competition starting in 2021.

In those three proposals there is no place for an Argentine team and Australia would be forced to resign participating teams. In recent days, the tension between New Zealand and Australia grew and everything seems to indicate that the Aussies would not accept the conditions as the Kiwis impose them.

Argentina awaits a resolution since another of the rumors that has emerged indicates that if Australia breaks away from New Zealand, it would give a place to an Argentine team in its competition.

Now, what would New Zealand’s three proposals be?

The simplest of those options is an eight-team format that will see each team face each other at home and away during a regular 15-week season. With semifinals and a final, that would mean that 59 games are played in total. In this there would only be room for 2 or 3 Australian teams, which Rugby Australia already flatly refused.

The remaining two options would allow 10 teams, but both create an imbalance with the draw. The first of those options will see each team play against four teams twice and against five teams once, the second would reverse that order, with each team playing against five teams twice and against four teams once.

Including semifinals and a final, option one would create a 68 game season, option two would increase that number to 73 games. Both options could make room for up to four Australian teams if the parties can fix the terms.
