The German striker already trains alongside his teammates on the London team, but will not be able to debut until the start of next season in September.
Timo Werner gave an interview to the official site of Chelsea and revealed the conversations he had with Frank Lampard before arriving at the London club from Leipzig. The German striker agreed to move to Stamford Bridge last month after the Blues paid £ 47.5 million to activate a release clause in their contract.
Werner started training at Chelsea, but will not be able to debut until the 2020-21 season begins. The 24-year-old acknowledged that talking to the coach helped him convince himself that he was making the right move.
“He (Lampard) was the main point. We talked a lot about things like the system, about how he wants to play, how he sees me and how the system adjusts to me. He is a very nice guy who not only told me what he wants from me as a player, because he wants to help me as a man. Now we know each other a little better and I’m happy to be here, “he explained.
He added: “When you have the decision to leave your old club and come to a big club like this, it was a dream that came true for me, because Chelsea is a very big club. I know the players who won the Champions League like Drogba, like my new coach Frank Lampard, Petr Cech. It’s like a little dream for me, but I don’t want to be like them, I want to be part of a new era here, so I will play to try my best. “
Werner is confident that his style will suit the Premier League. “The Premier League style is very fast and my specialty is that I am really fast, so I think it is perfect for me to play here,” said the attacker who scored 34 goals in 45 games for Leipzig in the 2019-20 season.
“It is another league in another country, so I can improve to take it to another level, so those are the reasons why I come to the Premier League and Chelsea. I will try to score as many goals as I can, that is the great reason why they bought me, to bring the goals I scored in Leipzig here, and perhaps score more goals than there, “he closed.
