Rafael Nadal confirmed that he will not play the US Open 2020: the manacorí, champion of the last edition of the tournament, preferred not to go to the United States due to the world health crisis caused by the Covid-19 virus.
With the new ATP scoring regime, Nadal will not lose the points achieved in 2019, when he defeated Medvedev in the tournament final and achieved his last Grand Slam tournament.
Nadal, currently No. 2 in the world at 370 points from Djokovic, will also not play the Cincinnati Masters 1000 and his return will be on the brick dust tour in Europe: Kiztbuhel and Rome are the previous tournaments to Roland Garros, the preferred tournament of Nadal.
“After much thought I have decided not to participate in the US Open this year. The health situation is still very complicated around the world with cases of COVID-19 and outbreaks that seem out of control,” the Manacorí published on his Instagram account.
Nadal first played the US Open in 2003 and won it in 2010, 2013, 2017 and 2019. Behind Roland Garros, it is the Grand Slam in which he won the most titles.
