María Angélica Bernal lives a dream, a dream that has come true. The organization of the US Open gave the list of players who will participate in the wheelchair test and the Colombian will thus have her absolute debut in a Grand Slam in her sports career.
Bernal is ranked N ° 10 in the world in the specialty of adapted tennis and will be from the game in the cement of New York, with a table that will include eight players.
“It is a competition of the highest level. There are the best players in the world and I have already faced them,” Bernal told the Colombian Tennis Federation when the news was revealed. “I am very happy to be able to be on that list, that it is my first Grand Slam. It is one of the goals I had this year, so it is a dream come true,” she added.
Bernal, from Bogotá, is 25 years old and has played the ITF wheelchair circuit since 2007. Since then, he has won 21 singles titles, four in 2019, one of his best seasons. “My level was very good before quarantine. 2019 was a great year for me, the best of my sports career. And all this is due to the great work of my team and the national institutions,” he said.
Thus, Bernal will be participating for the first time in a Grand Slam, a dream that he had been pursuing for a long time. “It is an opportunity to continue working to qualify for the next Grand Slam. My short-term goal is to be among the best eight in the world, as well as to reach the Paralympic Games in Tokyo in 2021.”
The adapted tennis mode of the US Open will be played from September 10 to 13 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. The leader of the draw will be the Dutch Diede de Groot, while Bernal will be the seventh best classified of the eight who secured a place in the contest.
