The Nervión team was not superior to their rival, but they held out when they had to hold on and hit at key moments to get a ticket to the Europa League grand final.
Seville is the first finalist of the UEFA Europa League. Those from Nervión won 2-1 a Manchester United in the semifinal match played in the RheinEnergieStadion of the city of Colonia and they took passage to the final instance of the competition. Julen Lopetegui’s men will face the winner of the series between Inter and Shakhtar.
The first half was back and forth and had a frantic pace. United were the first to hit the opponent’s goal. The Red Devils approached after a nice combination between Martial and Rashford. Diego Carlos tried to close the English player when the latter was about to take the shot and ended up hitting him on the knee. Undisputed penalty that the Portuguese Bruno Fernandes changed for goal.
But Sevilla did not sit idly by, and after a few minutes, he was aware of the tie: after a beautiful wall between the Argentine Lucas Ocampos and Reguilón, the Spanish side sent a low center that found Suso at the far post to to mark the partial tie.
The Nervión team seemed to feel the intensity of the match in the first minutes of the complement, and United took advantage of it. Solskjaer’s men had five clear goal chances in a row, but in each of them they found a limb of goalkeeper Bono, one of the figures of the crash.
And as usually happens in these kinds of matches, when you don’t score in the opposite goal, then you suffer in your own. This is how Sevilla, in one of the few chances it had in the complement, found the qualifying goal: captain Jesús Navas sent a cross from the right that found Luuk de Jong, who all he had to do was push her .
In this way, Sevilla, the most winning team in the competition, got into a new final and will now go for their sixth crown. United perhaps deserved more, but left with nothing.
