The Blaugrana club has to pay the clause that the 57-year-old strategist has tied to the Dutch Federation before taking the reins of the Catalan squad.
Ronald Koeman will be announced in the imminent as the new coach of the FC Barcelona and the club wants to be able to present it in the next few hours. In the absence of the last details to definitively close the agreement, the Dutchman will take over the reins of the team, replacing Quique Setién, fired after the Lisbon debacle against Bayern Munich for the Champions League.
Waiting for the official announcement, which will come when the technician manages to dissociate himself from the Dutch Federation (KNVB), the Catalan institution and the coach agree that, 25 years after his goodbye to Barça as a footballer, the Dutchman will return to the team as coach.
As the Goal site learned, Barcelona must compensate the Dutch Federation with the payment of one million euros for the signing of Koeman, the amount to be paid by the release clause that he has in his contract as coach of the orange team, as long as it was the Blaugrana club that went to look for him, as it happened.
That is the first step that Barça will have to take in order to finalize its signing and it is the task entrusted to the Catalan CEO, Òscar Grau, who on Monday afternoon traveled to Amsterdam, to finalize the pact.
Koeman agrees to sign one year and one optional
In the last hours the contacts between Koeman, Grau on behalf of Barcelona, the coach’s agent, Rob Jansen, and the lawyer Wim Nan, a regular agent in this type of negotiations with Dutch football stars and who has a good relationship with Koeman. Between all the parties they reached a satisfactory agreement and managed to reach a consensus to agree on a contract with a single year duration, extendable to another one if the next president deems its continuity convenient. Such is the confidence of the 57-year-old strategist in his possibilities, that he believes that he will gain continuity without having to sign a long entry link.
Josep Bartomeu, president of the culé, opted for a technician who has a certain acceptance among the social mass and who will have free hands to carry out the cleaning in the changing room. Koeman, the hero of Wembley 1992, is a good umbrella for the board after the humiliating 8-2 suffered in Lisbon. It is supposed to be a ‘heavy hand’ profile.
Will not arrive alone
Koeman will return to Barcelona accompanied in what will be his third stage as a Blaugrana after shining as a player and taking his first steps as a coach with Louis van Gaal in 1999. He will not arrive alone at the Catalan ship but will do so with the current DT of Hoffenheim, Alfred Schreuder, who the previous season had been Erik ten Hag’s assistant at Frenkie De Jong’s Ajax.
In this context, Barcelona, with or without Koeman, still does not have enough liquidity to make more incorporations unless he sells before, and this will be the first task of the brand new coach as soon as he signs his signature and becomes the new culé coach. And from then on it will choose those that follow and those that leave in this market.
