The strange Cecchinato case at the Grand Slams

The Italian Marco Cecchinato (108th), who lost in the first round of the US Open 2020 to the South African Lloyd Harris (95th), shows some curious numbers in the 13 Grand Slams he played.

It is that, the native of Palermo, fell in the first round in 12 of the 13 Grand Slams in which he participated. His executioners, on several occasions, were players below 80th place, such as Henri Laaksonen (119th at the 2019 US Open), Nicolas Mahut (259th at Roland Garros 2019), Filip Krajinovic (93rd at the Open Australia 2019), Alex de Minaur (80th at Wimbledon 2018) and Mardy Fish (581st at US Open 2015).

But, the exception for Cecchinato were the semifinals he reached at Roland Garros 2018. In that tournament he beat Marius Copil, Marco Trungelliti, Pablo Carreño Busta, David Goffin and gave the surprise in the quarterfinals against Novak Djokovic, at that time 22nd classified, beating him 6-3 7-6 (4), 1-6, 7-6 (11). Dominic Thiem was the one who beat him in the semis by 5-7 6-7 (10) and 1-6.
