Major impact on Kitzbuhel ATP. On his return to the courts, Fabio Fognini suffered a heavy defeat.
The Italian, 12th in the world ranking, yielded to Swiss Marc Andreas Husle (303 °) with a resounding 6-2 and 6-1. Less than an hour demanded Husle stay with his fourth match in four days, as it emerged from qualifying.
The Italian returned to the circuit after having surgery on both ankles that had caused him discomfort in recent years. “I have had a problem with my left ankle for three and a half years, it is a problem that I have learned to face. Then my right ankle began to give problems also in the last two years,” he pointed out.
This was the Italian’s first meeting since March, when he played Davis Cup, although on Wednesday he gave up in Kitzbuhel but in doubles.
Beyond the forcefulness of the result, in terms of ranking it is his worst defeat since 2017 when in Buenos Aires he fell 6-4 and 6-3 against a returned but very experienced Tommy Robredo (550 °, but No. 5 in 2006 and owner of 12 ATP titles).
And the previous fall with a player outside the Top 300 was 10 years ago: in New Haven 2010 he lost 2-6, 6-0 and 7-6 (4) against South African Andrew Anderson (452nd and barely reached 356th place ATP as the best ranking of his career).
