The Council of CONMEBOL approved, in its last meeting, the modifications in the format of the South American Conmebol, aimed at ensuring that each of the countries is better represented in the different phases of the competition.
This was communicated by the mother entity of South American football, highlighting that what is also sought is for the 2021 edition to be more competitive and attractive.
“The new format does not imply alterations in the usual calendar of competitions or an overload for clubs and associations and will be played with the same number of teams as at present ”, explains Conmebol.
And completed: “In the new version a phase 1 is added, played in the countries, with round-trip matches between their participating clubs, to qualify for the group stage. In this way, the presence of at least two teams for each country in the group stage of CONMEBOL Sudamericana is guaranteed ”.
To these the 12 teams from Argentina and Brazil will be added directly classified and four more clubs from phase 3 of CONMEBOL Libertadores.
It is also worth remembering that the teams that have finished third in each group of CONMEBOL Libertadores will be added to those classified for the round of 16.
A total of 56 teams will take part in the tournament that will include 157 matches, with the only final scheduled for November 6.
A CONMEBOL is coming @Sudamericana more competitive and representative!
🏆🗓️ Starting in 2021 the Tournament will be played in 3 phases: Preliminary Phase, Group Phase and Final Phase.
