The Springboks Showdown turned green

The ‘Green’ team played better, especially in the complement, and beat ‘Gold’ in the confrontation of Boks. The green scored three tries and declared a 25-9 win at the Springbok Showdown in Newlands. From a competitive point of view, there was not much at stake and the game was not very entertaining, but it meant the return to activity of the South African team.

The friendly pitted several prominent Springbok stars against each other and provided a platform for young people to play alongside and against their consummate and world-renowned heroes. In addition, it served to see how each player arrives thinking about the Rugby Championship.

Since the announcement of this match, the rugby crowd formed the narrative that it was a Springbok test match, but if we’re honest, the quality of this match was poor. The long-awaited battle of openings between Elton Jantjies and Damian Willemse for the Springbok jersey 10 in the absence of Handré pollard it was non-existent. What’s more, the second missed three penalties, two of which were head-on and the remaining at a crucial moment.

As can be expected in the game after a six-month strike due to Covid-19 restrictions, the intensity and urgency levels of the players were not high. Team Green had all the ancestry but not the fluency to back it up. Despite fierce attack from their heavyweights, Team Gold was superb on defense, but handling errors were a concern and impeded any significant momentum.

After two penalties from Jantjies and one from Willemse (1/3), the first half ended in a poor 6 to 3.

Five minutes into the second half, Gold conceded a criminal try and his opening saw the yellow card for an exaggerated offside, consequently Curwin Bosch assumed the responsibility of kicking and Bosch scored two penalties. On the other hand, Captain Siya Kolisi and Juarno Augustus were the authors of Green’s tries.
