With the classifications of Diego Schwartzman (14th) Y Nadia Podoroska (131 °) to the Roland Garros quarter-finals, something was repeated that had not happened in 16 years: that there are Argentines in that instance in the female and male box.
At the 2004 edition of Roland Garros, Juan Ignacio Chela, David Nalbandian, Gastón Gaudio and Guillermo Coria it was the Argentines who came to that instance. Chela was the only one who lost in this round, against Briton Tim Henmann 2-6, 4-6 and 4-6. On the side of the other Argentines, Nalbandian defeated Gustavo Kuerten by 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 and 7-6 (6), Gastón Gaudio did the same with Lleyton Hewitt by 6-3, 6-2 and 6-2 and Guillermo Coria got rid of the Spanish Carlos Moyá by 7-5, 7-6 (3) and 6-3.
Then Gaudio would defeat Nalbandian Y Coria He would do the same against Henmann for both of them to get into the final. There Gaudio triumphed 0-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 and 8-6 and would be awarded his only Grand Slam title.
On the female side, it was Paola Suarez who reached that instance. There she faced the Russian Maria Sharapova and defeated it 6-1 and 6-3. In the semifinals, she faced another Russian: Elena Dementieva. But Argentina fell in straight sets by 0-6 and 7-5.
