The top European tournament, Six Nations which will have an atypical edition with eight teams in November and December but cannot yet confirm the competition for 2021.
The main cause of the uncertainty around Six Nations 2021 is the government policies of the participating countries.
Bernard Laporte, recent President-elect at the head of the French Federation, told Midi Olympique: “The short-term future is uncertain, whether for the amateur or professional world. The next few months are not very reassuring. Imagine that all the parties have to be played behind closed doors? Even for us with a 6 Nations Tournament without an audience! It is a hypothesis that we must consider. “
In addition, Laporte warned that television rights would not be sufficient to guarantee the survival of the federations if the parties were behind closed doors.
The Six Nations committee is aware that the absence of spectators in the stadiums in February and March is a dramatic and increasingly credible possibility in view of the measures taken by the different governments concerned.
In The Times, the general director of the 6 Nations Benjamin Morel admitted that several scenarios are currently being studied: “Everything has to be studied. We need the fans to return to the stadiums. We are not at the point of announcing that the 2021 Tournament it is postponed, but that is one of the options. It is not easy as there is no guarantee that the situation will be better if we delay the Tournament. “
