Argentine hope is more alive than ever in Paris. To the victories of Nadia Podoroska and Diego Schwartzman in the professional women’s and men’s teams, we must add those of Juan Bautista Torres and Alex Barrena in the juniors.
In the first instance, Torres defeated Brazilian Gustavo Heide, the fourteenth seed of the tournament, in a South American classic, 6-3 and 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time where he will face local Lilian Marmousez.
Barrena, who has yet to give up sets so far in Paris, defeated local Martin Breysach (15th) favorite 7-6 (3), 7-5. In search of the semifinals he will face the Swiss Leandro Riedi, eighth seed.
Young Argentines are two games away from equaling the best performance for the country in the category. In 2010, Agustín Velotti and Andrea Collarini disputed the final in which the Corrientes was proclaimed champion.
