The NFL It will not tolerate any kind of protocol violation, no matter how minimal. The league has been implementing sanctions against franchise coaches and staff members to enforce the rules. Now, after the complaints of many referees, the organization has announced a new punishable action for the coaches and members of the teams’ coaching staff.
Perry Fewell, Senior Vice President of Officers Administration, NFL, has issued a statement warning the teams of new sanctions for non-compliance with the anti-COVID-19 protocol. After the coaches and staff who did not use the mask in the matches were sanctioned, they will begin with the penalties against those who remove it to communicate with the referees.
“We have seen multiple occasions where head coaches have removed their masks to communicate with officials during games. Doing so creates unnecessary and increased risk for game officials, head coaches and others, and is inconsistent with the requirement that face shields must be worn at all times, ”the statement said.
Fewell stressed that this measure is intended to protect the arbitrators of the NFL. Most of the protocols established so far were focused on teams. Now the officers will be backed by the league. “In accordance with all other individuals on the bench, match officials are entitled to their respect while performing their duties during the pandemic.”
What sanctions will be applied?
Unlike the sanctions that had been applied until the last date, these new penalties will not be economic. If any coach or member of the staff communicates without a mask with the referees, they will be penalized with throwing yards in the game. “We have reminded officials that if a person who is not wearing a mask approaches them inappropriately, they have the authority to take administrative or refereeing action, including a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.”
