Chess to reach the ATP Finals and why Schwartzman is close

Novak, Djokovic, Rafael Nadal (who announced that he will play the Masters 1000 in Paris), Dominic, Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev They have their ticket to the ATP Finals in London, from November 15 to 22. For the two remaining places there are nine players separated by a thousand points. Andrey Rublev (3429) and Diego Schwartzman (3180) are the players who today would keep those last two tickets

Four weeks of competition remain: Cologne and Antwerp (both ATP 250) this week, Vienna (500) and Astana (250) next, the Masters 1000 in Paris from 2 to 8 November and the ATP 250 in Sofia from 8 to 11/14.

The first player to be left out is Matteo Berrettini, although he has a “liar” ranking in the race to London. His 3,075 points will drop to 2,875 on November 9 because the 2019 ATP Finals points are defended in the rankings. So Peque’s immediate pursuer is at 305 points.

Each point will be worth gold from now until November 14, as Rublev already demonstrated by scoring at the last minute in Sofia where he will have to play qualy. But the fundamental tournament is Paris: there Peque adds from the second round, like Berrettini, Bautista Agut and Goffin. The main threats for the Argentine to arrive in London, behind Berrettini are two that defend a lot: while Monfils (10th in the race, 320 points behind the Argentine) reached the quarterfinals while Shapovalov (11th, 350 points behind Peque) made the final in 2019.

On the side of Schwartzman, in 2019 he made the round of 16 in Antwerp and that is why he went to play in Cologne. Made it to the final in Vienna last year (the only 500 left) so he’s unlikely to play it this season.

Heading to London:
7- Andrey Rublev 3429
8- Diego Schwartzman 3180

9-Matteo Berrettini 3075 (on November 9 he lost 200 points)
10- Gael Monfils 2860
11- Denis Shapovalov 2830
12- Roberto Bautista Agut 2710
13- David Goffin 2555
14- Pablo Carreño Busta 2400
15- Fabio Fognini 2400
