Lorenzo Sonego, the surprise: entered for Schwartzman and eliminated Djokovic

Without a doubt that Lorenzo Sonego (42 of the world) is the great surprise of ATP 500 from Vienna. The Italian defeated Novak Djokovic by 6-2 and 6-1 and advanced to the semifinal of the contest that takes place in Austria.

Sonego entered the main draw as a lucky loser, before the loss of Diego schwartzman, who preferred to rest to reach the Masters 1000 in Paris-Bercy in optimal condition. In the first round of qualifying, the Italian beat Lucas Miedler by 6-4 and 6-3, but then fell to Aljaz Bedene by 6-2, 4-6 and 7-5. Following Peque’s decision not to attend the Vienna tournament, Lawrence he got into the main draw and that’s where his story began.

First, the 25-year-old tennis player defeated Dusan Lajovic 6-4 and 6-3, while in the round of 16 he did the same against the Polish Hubert hurkacz by 7-6 (6) and 7-6 (2). Finally, the Italian obtained one of his best victories in his career: against Novak Djokovic, the world’s number one, to advance to the ATP 500 semifinal in Vienna.

In his career, the Italian only won one title, at the ATP 250 in Antalya in 2019, by defeating Miomir kecmanovic by 6-7, 7-6 and 6-1. In addition, in the Grand Slam, his maximum record is reaching the fourth round in Roland Garros, in the last edition, in which he fell to Schwartzman himself. Then both in the US Open as in the Australian Open his greatest achievement is second round, and in Wimbledon never managed to get past the first instance.
