The coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) is hitting Europe all over again. In the last hours different countries are taking different measures to be able to neutralize the advance of the virus. One of them is Portugal, which in the coming weeks will host the last date of the 2020 calendar of MotoGP. In that country, the decision was made to carry out a very strict quarantine of the entire population and novelties in the category they did not wait.
The last date of the championship will be the Grand Prix of Portugal. However, the race is hanging by a thread due to the second wave of COVID-19 infections that is hitting Europe. In the last 24 hours, 4,007 new cases were confirmed. This record is the second highest since the start of the pandemic. In addition, 39 new deaths were recorded.
However, the news of the new confinement requested by the Portuguese Government set off the alarms of the organization of the MotoGP Portuguese Grand Prix. The Minister of Health of that country had said that every week the possibility of suspending the event that will take place in three weeks is being evaluated. Since Dorna Sports, the company that carries out the category, has already confirmed that there will be no public in the stands.
Formula 1 as an example
In the last week, the Formula 1 and the International Automobile Federation (FIA) confirmed that after the Portuguese Grand Prix, nine positive cases of COVID-19 were detected. In the statement released it was not clarified who they were, although they are all members of the paddock.
The government entities of that country showed all their anger after allowing 27,000 people to be present at the Portimao circuit. The images that could be seen that weekend showed the closeness between the spectators, who did not respect the sanitary preventive measures. “We have already told the MotoGP organizers that it will be without an audience due to our inability to organize events of this scale with spectators,” they said from the Government.
