Master Óscar Tabárez summoned 23 players in Uruguay this Friday to face the third and fourth dates of the Qualifiers for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, highlighting the returns of Josema Giménez and Edinson Cavani, who after about a year will return to defend the Celeste. The National Team will face Colombia on Friday the 13th in Barranquilla, and on Tuesday the 17th it will host Brazil at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo.
Still with Fernando Muslera in recovery, the three goalkeepers will be the same as those who were in the first two dates against Chile and Ecuador (the incumbent Martín Campaña, and the alternates Rodrigo Muñoz and Martín Silva).
In defense, the most important change is the return of Giménez (who due to coronavirus was not at the start of the Qualifiers), and the loss, due to a muscle injury, of Ronald Araújo. For his part, defender Agustín Oliveros is once again the only footballer mentioned in the local environment.
Beyond the absence of Giorgian De Arrascaeta, in the steering wheel area there are no major modifications although it is important to highlight the best football moment he is going through Lucas Torreira in relation to last month, when his departure from Arsenal in England had been defined very recently. The midfielder has managed in recent weeks to add key minutes playing for Atlético de Madrid, an issue that allows him to arrive in better condition.
In attack, Cavani returns, having already played official minutes with his new club, Manchester United. In turn, Stuani, absent for the matches against Chile and Ecuador, will not be for these new commitments, while Diego Rossi was called up again.
Cavani’s last match with La Celeste was on November 18, 2019 in the friendly against Argentina. In turn, Giménez’s last participation with the Uruguayan National Team had been on the FIFA date of October last year. As the forward was not on the FIFA dates of September and October after the 2019 Copa América, and the defender was unable to participate in the November matches against Hungary and Argentina, the last time Josema and Cavani met in the National Team was playing the Quarterfinals of the Copa América against Peru (loss on penalties on June 29, 2019).
The Celeste squad will begin training in Barranquilla next Monday. The Uruguayan Technical Corps will travel this Sunday from Montevideo with Oliveros and the remaining 22 players will arrive in Colombia on Monday. It should be noted that the players of the Uruguayan and Colombian national teams that play in Europe will jointly make a charter flight from Madrid to Barranquilla.
The Uruguayan team and the coffee team will play on Friday the 13th at the Roberto Meléndez Metropolitan Stadium at 3:30 p.m. in Colombia (5:30 p.m. in Uruguay). The game will have as main referee the Argentine Fernando Rapallini.
After the meeting, the Uruguayan delegation will travel to Montevideo, where it will arrive on Saturday at seven in the morning, and will remain at the Celeste Complex. There he will train on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, prior to the match on Tuesday 17 at 20 hours against Brazil.
