The weekend of MotoGP began with one of the most important controversies of the year. The highest category, together with the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM), they gave him a terrible sanction to Yamaha. This could spell the end of the championship for those who race with the brand. However, the decision was different.

This Thursday afternoon, while everyone was waiting for the news about the possible return of Valentino rossi, the FIM shook the whole world. Yamaha received a terrible penalty for violating a regulation regarding engines. This corresponds to an investigation started in the first race of the year, at the Jerez circuit.

The regulations indicate that each team has a certain number of engines available for the entire season. Due to the pandemic, these cannot be modified and are sealed until the end of the season to reduce expenses. These regulations will continue until 2021. However, it was confirmed that Yamaha opened them and replaced valves in the Spanish Grand Prix, where they obtained a double.

The sanction

MotoGP and the FIM announced at the end of Thursday that 50 points in the constructors’ championship will finally be taken away from the Japanese brand. The Official Yamaha team will have 20 units subtracted from the team classifier, due to second place Maverick Viñales in that race. This makes the structure begin to say goodbye to the championship.

For its part, Petronas Yamaha he subtracted 37 points. Fabio Quartararo had won that race comfortably, while his partner Franco Morbidelli was fourth, behind Andrea Dovizioso. Despite this decision, surprisingly the drivers were not penalized. Due to this, the rest of the teams showed their discomfort at the decision made.
