Fernando Gago ended his professional career at the age of 34 with the Vélez Sarsfield jersey and did it where he wanted most: on a playing field.
During its rich history of 15 years, had to face several very hard injuries and never lowered his arms.
In the last 5 years suffered five very serious injuries and always struggled to return to play.
The first one occurred September 13, 2015, when he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in his left foot, a few seconds into the match between Boca and River, in the Monumental.
In february 2016 returned to the courts and played 18 games until on April 24, when he suffered the same injury, particularly in the graft of the past rupture. Fate marked that the rival is River again, when he fell heavily in the area at the end of the first half and had to withdraw with a lot of pain.
After this injury, Gago returned in November and shone at the end of the year, with very good performances.
In 2017 He maintained the good level and even took him to the Argentine National Team, but his new experience in the Albiceleste lasted a few minutes, since against Peru he suffered a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee on October 5th.
His attempts to return as soon as possible to keep the illusion of the World Cup in 2018They took him to training less than five months later, but a few days later he had to stop due to a detachment of the adhesions of the ligaments, being relegated for another month.
On May 12 he returned to the Primera de Boca, in the away draw against Huracán 3-3. His mind turned to the CONMEBOL Libertadores and to win it with the Xeneize shirt, but in the final in the remembered match in Madrid came a new very serious injury: he cut the Achilles tendon in his right foot while extra time was played.
That was his last image with Boca’s shirt and everything indicated that it was the end of his professional career, but his motivation and desire and the call of his friend Gabriel Heinze gave him a new opportunity.
On August 24, 2019, he put on the Vélez shirt for the second time, after a brief step in 2013 and as always he did showing a good level.
In January 2020, 13 games after his re-debut, Gago suffered a new tear in the knee ligaments that had been previously injured.
The Coronavirus pandemic and the football stop gave him the chance to analyze what he wanted to do and as expected, Gago did not lower his arms and decided to play again.
The match against Gimnasia and Esgrima La Plata for the Professional League Cup scored the end of his illustrious career, who will be remembered for her achievements and for the resilience of ‘Pintita’ in the face of the very hard injuries suffered.
