Fernando Gago announced his retirement: "I want to leave football my way"

After his last visit to Vélez, Fernando Gago announced his retirement from football at midnight this Tuesday in an emotional letter in your account Instagram.

The midfielder that emerged in Boca, and passed through Real Madrid, Rome, Valencia and the Argentine National Team, explained the reasons for his decision: “How everyone knows I have lived fantastic moments and I have obtained the career that not even in my best dreams as a boy I would have imagined. I also had difficult moments, repeated injuries that affected me during these last years, but in turn they taught me and made me the person I am today. “

And he added: “Now I am without physical problems, I have fulfilled the goals that I set for myself and that is why I decide to step aside, feeling the happiness of leaving football my way, by my decision, at the right time.”

Gago had a brilliant career but marked in his last leg by injuries. In Boca, where he debuted at the end of 2004, he obtained 9 titles. In 2006 he moved to Real Madrid where he added four trophies. With Vélez, the club in which he finally retired, he shouted champion once. In addition, he won the 2005 Under 20 World Cup with the Argentine National Team. With the Major, he joined the finalist squad of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

In recent years he suffered five major injuries that interrupted much of the outcome of his career. Three Achilles tendon tears and two knee ligament tears kept him off the court for a long time.

However, the midfielder had the willpower to overcome and was able to retire on the court as he intended.

I want to tell you that I have made the decision to end my career as a professional footballer. After 15 years of profession, I choose this path with complete peace of mind and satisfaction. As you all know, I have lived through fantastic moments and have obtained the career that not even in my best dreams as a boy I would have imagined. I also had difficult moments, repeated injuries that affected me during these last years, but in turn they taught me and made me the person I am today. Now I am without physical problems, I fulfilled the objectives that I set for myself and that is why I decide to take a step aside, feeling the happiness of leaving football my way, by my decision, at the right time. I thank all the technical bodies, medical bodies, props and leaders with whom I shared experiences in different institutions. I thank all the fans, who make this sport unique. A special thanks to all my teammates, who are the most beautiful thing that football has left me, I was lucky enough to share and meet great players but even better people. I would have liked to be able to communicate it in another way, but due to the current situation we are experiencing due to the pandemic, I decided to do it through this means. Soccer is my passion and it will always be so. Thanks for the support and affection. A hug to all Fernando Gago
