Uruguay faces Colombia this Friday as a visitor for the third date of the CONMEBOL Qualifiers towards the Qatar 2022 World Cup. With changes forced by injuries, and with two fundamental returns, The cast led by Maestro Óscar Tabárez will try to get units in Barranquilla, a city where it could never beat the coffee team.
In relation to the match against Ecuador, the Celeste coach is forced to make three variations due to the recent injuries of Ronald Araújo, Federico Valverde and Maximiliano Gómez, who will not be able to be in this new double date of the Qualifiers. In addition, another modification is foreseen: Nico de la Cruz it would be of the game again.
The starting goalkeeper Fernando Muslera is still in recovery; but in return, Josema Giménez and Edinson Cavani were called up again as they were again in good physical and football condition.
The goalkeeper against Colombia, as against Chile and Ecuador, will be Martín Campaña. With the presence of Martín Cáceres (who should have pressured Fiorentina to let him travel to Barranquilla and thus be able to defend the national team), the only change expected in defense is the entry of Giménez instead of the injured Araújo. Curiously, on three dates Uruguay will have used three defenders to the right: on the first match Sebastián Coates played, on date 2 the starter was Araújo and against Colombia it will be Josema. Diego Godín and Matías Viña will continue in the starting eleven and will complete the defensive line.
In the midfield, there will be a mandatory variant in relation to the match against Ecuador for the last date. With Valverde injured, Torreira will enter, who is in better footballing condition than in October; the Atlético de Madrid midfielder will make up the double five with Rodrigo Bentancur. For the right band will go Nahitan Nández and on the left most likely Nicolas de la Cruz be headline again instead of Brian Rodriguez.
And in attack Edinson Cavani is emerging as a starter to make up the now historic and legendary offensive duo with Luis Suárez. Cavani’s last match with La Celeste was against Argentina on November 18, 2019, a friendly match played in Tel Aviv and which culminated 2-2 with goals from the Salta forwards for the Uruguayan team.
Celso Otero, maestro Tabárez’s technical assistant, assured this Wednesday about Cavani: “I have seen him very well, he is in a position to play with the same generosity that he has always done. I think no one can say for how many minutes it is, we will see it from the moment he participates in the game, although it may be an unknown if it is from the beginning or entering we will see how much of what he usually does at this moment ”.
Thus, Uruguay would form with Campaña, Cáceres, Giménez, Godín and Viña; Nández, Torreira, Bentancur and Nico de la Cruz; Suárez and Cavani.
The last antecedent against Colombia in Barranquilla marks a 2 to 2 tie played on October 11, 2016. That afternoon Celeste formed with Muslera, Corujo, Coates, Godín and Gastón Silva, in the middle Sánchez, Vecino, Arévalo Ríos and Cristian Rodríguez , and in attack Cavani with Suárez.
