Nicolás de la Cruz spoke from Barranquilla about Friday’s meeting between Colombia and Uruguay for a new round of the South American Qualifiers. The footballer spoke with Universal Radio 970 AM and commented on his adaptation to River and Argentine soccer.
“Getting used to the heat in Barranquilla is difficult but we will try to cope with it in the best way,” said the 23-year-old midfielder. De la Cruz said about his great present: “In River we had to start playing a little earlier than the rest of the Argentine teams because of our participation in the Libertadores, there I have a little more games, not as much as the players of the other leagues, but I have felt very comfortable after the return of the quarantine “.
It was difficult for the Uruguayan to adapt to Argentine football but he has managed to transform himself into a fundamental piece in the team led by Marcelo Gallardo. “I changed a lot because Argentine soccer and the level of the club is a very high demand, the River world is very difficult to cope with, the adaptation time I had was quite long, luckily it has passed and today I can enjoy the club ”, commented the player trained in Liverpool from Uruguay.
The footballer added: “The player who leaves Uruguayan soccer later encounters another reality, with another soccer and you have to reinvent yourself, Obviously, what capacity most of us have, for something they want us from the outside. Uruguay produces very good players, with great capacity; then it is in the attitudes and in the desire to progress of each one, to get ahead ”.
“It was difficult for me at first, then I was able to accommodate and connect to the River world and then I began to enjoy what a great institution is worldwide”, appreciated the attacking midfielder.
De la Cruz commented on the continuous demand of coach Gallardo and the repeated successes of the Millionaire team: “What happens is that the messages are very clear at the beginning of the year, the objectives are specific and clear; all the time we try not to blur, to keep winning, it is the coach’s mentality, it is the message that goes down: to continue along that line and the ambition to always win and not to change the forms and style of play beyond the losses we suffer in every beginning of the year ”.
A member of the youth process of the Uruguayan National Team, the great performance in the Argentine club determined that in this 2020 he had his first call to the senior team and in October he was able to make his debut by facing Chile and Ecuador for the first two dates of the Qualifiers. De la Cruz was a starter against the trans-Andean team and in Quito he entered in the second half; against Colombia this Friday, the midfielder could start again.
“It will be a tough game, it may be that they also come from Europe but it is their country, their land, and they know the heat of Barranquilla very well; we are going to try to rescue the necessary points, the objective is clear and with our weapons we will try to go find the game that is what we came for “said De la Cruz.
“One always has to be up to par and capable of defending this shirt, around there the style of play is a little different from River’s but the truth is I have to be up to par, for something Tabárez asked me for something every time he used me What I could do, is just to convince myself and try to help the team in whatever way I can, ”said the footballer in relation to the defensive work required of him in the National Team.
Finally, he commented: “Colombia has a very good game on the bands but we also have our weapons that are very powerful.”
Uruguay won against Chile on the first date and fell to Ecuador on the second; for its part, Colombia defeated Venezuela in the debut of these Qualifiers and then equaled against the trans-Andean team as a visitor. The match for the third date between the Uruguayan team and the Colombian team will be played this Friday afternoon in Barranquilla.
