World Rugby announced that given the impact of COVID-19 and the likelihood of play Americas Rugby Championship (ARC) in full for two years in 2021 and 2022, the Rugby World Cup Board, in association with Rugby Americas North, South America Rugby and the respective unions, approved modifications to the qualification route for the Rugby World Cup 2023 in the region.
Qualifying for the Americas will now comprise two play-off matches. First, the two champions of 2021 Rugby Americas North and South America Rugby will play home and away to determine Americas 1, the first place in the region. The losing side will enter the play-off of Americas 2.
Parallel, the two runners-up of 2021 in North and South America will play at home and away to qualify for the Americas play-off 2. The winner, according to the total score of both games, will qualify for the Rugby World Cup 2023 as Americas 2 and the team loser will enter the Final Qualification Tournament.
