Jorge Lorenzo retired at the end of 2019 in the team Repsol Honda after an extensive and successful sports career. However, he did not stray entirely from the slopes. The Spaniard accepted an offer of Yamaha, with whom he obtained his three world titles MotoGP. He joined the ranks of the Japanese brand as a test pilot. Despite the experience, his performance was not the best and he did not continue with them.
Near the end of the season, Yamaha decided to fire Lorenzo from their ranks and hired a new rider (who was retiring), Cal crutchlow. After several seasons at Honda, the Briton accepted Yamaha’s offer and said goodbye to MotoGP. However the head of the Japanese team, Lin jarvis, believes that the decision to fire Lorenzo was the right one.
The Yamaha boss gave an interview on Monday where he assured that Lorenzo was affected by the low activity. It should be noted that the plan of the Japanese brand was to do several tests together with the three-time champion of the highest category. However, the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), he did not let them proceed normally.
“We actually only shot it for two days at Sepang and the Portimao test. The rest of the activities planned for this year were unfortunately canceled ”, assured Lin Jarvis in an interview with the medium ‘Motorsport.com’. Lorenzo will leave the team and still has no offers to get back on a motorcycle, which would leave him permanently retired.
“I still think Jorge would have been an excellent test driver to do the job. We are not going to make the same mistake twice, we are going to carry out a more intense test program next year and we believe that with the engineering changes we have a lot of information, so our engineers will modify the chassis next year and they will work to improve this matter ”, assured Jarvis to finish.
