South African fans call to postpone British & Irish Lions tour to 2021

The supporters of the British and Irish Lions have started a petition for this summer’s South Africa tour to be postponed until 2022 instead of being held in the UK and Ireland as the latest versions indicate.

Until now, More than 1,800 fans have urged local unions not to abandon the Lions’ 133-year history when conducting the series against the Springboks on those shores, which is one of the three contingency plans that are being examined due to the coronavirus pandemic.

If the tour cannot be completed in front of the full stadiums as scheduled, the decision must be made next month, then the other options are to delay the event by a year or to hold it behind closed doors in South Africa.

The petition considers a postponement to be the only acceptable option and demands that the 2022 summer tours give way to the Lions.

“Covid-19 will almost certainly prevent the 2021 British and Irish Lions tour from taking place in the host country of South Africa,” petition organizer Mark Gardner said on change.org.

“We are requesting that the home nations of England (RFU), Scotland (SRU), Ireland (IRFU) Wales (WRU), which collectively form the British & Irish Lions Board, and South Africa (SA Rugby) do the right thing. by agreeing to change the Lions tour to 2022, putting this before the needs of the summer tours proposed by their own country. The Lions only require 36 players from the four home countries.
