The pilots who run the Dakar Rally They have only one goal: to be crowned the winners of the most difficult race in the world. Going to the podium to receive the famous golden trophy of the race is an inexplicable sensation for those who arrive at the bivouac. However, the economic prizes distributed by the category also serve, especially to independent pilots.
The end result is the main objective, but the cash prize that the winners have is also kept in mind. For this 2021 the organization of the Dakar Rally invested a total of 290,000 euros, a slightly low figure. However, the economic crisis as a result of the coronavirus pandemic must be taken into account (COVID-19).
The categories of motorcycles and quads have the largest economic prize. Argentines Manuel Andújar and Kevin Benavides, winners of this edition, will keep a total of 50,000 euros in cash each. The second classified will receive 25,000 euros and the third 15,000 euros, all of them with the corresponding trophy of each category.
SSVs are the ones that receive the least cash. The Chilean Francisco ‘Chaleco’ López he kept 5,000 euros. The American Austin jones who finished in second place won only 2,000 euros, as did the Polish Aron domzala which was third in the general times table of the Dakar Rally.
However, the prizes that the winners of the truck and car categories will receive are striking. In both tests the winners will only receive the historic trophy, which weighs nine kilos and is in the shape of ‘Tuareg’. Stéphane Peterhansel and the russian Dmitry Sotnikov, they were the winners in both tests of the race and they will not have prize money.
