The Argentinian Santiago Ponzinibbio returned to official activity after two years in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The ‘Rasta’ suffered a tremendous technical knockout from the Chinese Li Jingliang, who sent him to the mat in the first round with a strong left foot to his chin. The combat was in the framework of UFC Fight Island 7 that is celebrated in the Yas Island from Abu Dhabi.
The 26-month wait for Ponzinibbio was long, the player from La Plata is much loved in the Latin American community and a lot of expectation was generated for this fight against the Chinese Li Jingliang. After several low kicks, which did not have much interference, the Chinese hit with a left jab to the face of the Argentine, which left him a knockout on the floor of the octagon. The judge quickly ended the fight and gave the Xinjiang native the victory by technical knockout.
The eastern Jingliang was not going to be Ponzinibbio’s rival at first, but given Muslim Salikhov’s positive for coronavirus, it was decided to change the main card. The Argentine’s last fight was in November 2018, when he beat Nel Magny by knockout. The injuries made ‘El Rasta’ have to suffer a lot of downtime, but he had established himself as the first Argentine to be part of a mein card in an event of this type in the UFC.
An infection in his leg, a fractured toe and the spread of the coronavirus were the issues that kept him from activity in recent times and that apparently have taken their toll. Since 2015 the Argentine did not lose, in his last seven meetings in his division all were victories, but this knockout ends his great positive streak.
Both fighters are out of the main welterweight rankings and the ‘Rasta’ will have to recover if he wants to aspire to the world title. In this division, the owner of the title is the Nigerian Kamaru Usman (he beat Jorge Masvidal in July 2020). His main potential adversary is Colby Covington. The ‘Daga Argentina’ resumed the activity with 34 years and a record of 28 victories (14 by KO and 6 by submission) and 4 defeats.
In the previous one, the Argentine took the opportunity to pay tribute to the idol Diego Armando Maradona, who died at the end of 2020. Ponzinibbio arrived with a banner that had an image of the Argentine star with the World Cup in his hands and the word “Forever”. The ‘Rasta’ decided to show it to the cameramen and his opponent helped him to make the message clear, in a good attitude of the native of China.
