As reported by French media Midi Olympique, former Wallabies coach Michael Cheika is the number one target for the vacant Montpellier head coach job heading into 2021.
After leaving his position as the Wallabies coach that he held from 2014 until the end of the 2019 World Cup, Cheika has not committed to any permanent coaching work. His most recent step was with Los Pumas as an external advisor to the staff led by Mario Ledesma during the last historic tour of the Three Nations 2020.
The Australian has long been of interest to Montpellier owner Mohed Altrad, who reportedly approached Cheika again to take over as head coach after Xavier Garbajosa’s departure last month.
If an agreement is reached, it would reach France in June; However, the Australian has already agreed to lead Lebanon in the 2021 Rugby League World Cup, which would coincide with the Top 14 season.
Montpellier is looking to reverse a worrying season in the French top tournament, where they are in the second to last place with only three wins in twelve games played.
