The memory of many fans of Michael Schumacher passes through two teams: Benetton Y Ferrari. However, few know that the German pilot passed through the team Jordan, at that time led by its founder Eddie jordan. The Irish, historical boss and current sportscaster recalled the 1991 Belgian Grand Prix, where ‘Schumi’ debuted. “He cheated me”Jordan commented with a laugh.
Schumacher came to Formula 1 thanks to a reprehensible action by Bertrand Gachot. The Belgian pilot had been in London a year earlier, and pepper sprayed a taxi driver. Because of that he was arrested and missed five races of the 1991 championship. Jordan was looking for a replacement, and he found him in a surprising way. A young Michael Schumacher was offered by his manager, Willy webber.
Jordan had a lot of concern for the 22-year-old coming from German Formula 3. So much so, that he asked Webber if he knew the circuit Spa-Francorchamps, to which he replied that he was absolutely familiar with the drawing. He even told her that he lived near Spa and that he used to try there. However, this was a total lie. Even the ‘Kaiser’ supported that falsehood to debut.
“He cheated me”
“He cheated on me and blatantly,” remembers Jordan. “Before the race I asked him if he had been to Spa. And when you ask a pilot that, you don’t mean if you know him as a tourist. You ask him if he ever competed there. He didn’t know the clue. He went to Spa with his father when he was still riding karts, he had never driven there ”, added the former team leader to the BBC.
Schumacher did not know the layout. However, his results were incredible: he went out to qualify and finished in seventh place ahead of drivers like Martin Brundle Y Ricardo Patrese. However, the race was not the best for ‘Schumi’. A break in the gearbox made him have to abandon a few meters to start. The next race began his history with Benetton and the rest is known: seven world titles.
