The last two weekends in February, Madrid will become the world capital of seven with the celebration of the Madrid Rugby 7s International Tournament. Sponsored by World Rugby and organized by the Spanish Rugby Federation (FER) with the invaluable help of the Madrid City Council and the Community of Madrid, this important international sporting event will help the Olympic form of rugby to resume its activity, precisely as a preparation for the Tokyo Olympics to be played during the European summer.
The tournament will be played in two rounds: the first, on February 20 and 21, and the second, on February 27 and 28. Twelve of the best teams in the world, six for women and six for men, will compete in each of them, so that each weekend there will be a winner.
In the men’s draw, there will be Los Pumas 7’s, United States, Kenya, three teams that have already achieved their qualification for the Tokyo Games; France, aspiring to one of the vacant places in the world playoffs; in addition to the host, Spain, and Portugal as invited team. In the women’s competition, the North American, African and French teams will repeat, in addition to the Spanish, and the teams of Poland and Russia will join.
The Madrid Rugby 7s International Tournament will be held at the Complutense University facilities, an emblematic place of Spanish rugby, which is already used to hosting important international events in the XV rugby mode.
The teams will begin to arrive in Madrid this Sunday, February 14, and will stay in different facilities throughout the Community of Madrid, where sanitary measures will be a priority and are included in a World Rugby protocol that will turn them into bubbles, as well as the venue where the tournament will be held.
The Pumas 7’s debut on Saturday, February 20, with the following Argentine schedules:
