This Australian Open that is being played will remain in the history of Russia as the only time, so far, that three compatriots managed to qualify for the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam. Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev and Aslan Karatsev are the ones who accomplished one of the most important feats in Russian men’s tennis.
The last time that three tennis players from the same country managed to get among the top eight of a major was at the United States Open in 2016. What succeeded were the French Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gael Monfils and Lucas Pouille, although none of these managed to reach the final of the tournament.
Tsonga, who was the best seeded of the three as ninth, had the difficult stop of facing the then and current No. 1 in the ranking, Novak Djokovic. The Frenchman had to retire due to injury after having lost the first two sets 6-3 and 6-2.
Monfils Y Pouille, they had to face each other to determine who was awarded the ticket to the semifinal of the tournament. The match went to Gael 6-4, 6-3 and 6-3, and so he agreed to the next instance and had the bad luck to run into Djokovic who swept him 6-3, 6-2, 3-6 and 6-2.
To see the last time that three tennis players from the same country played in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open we must go back to the 2000 tournament where americans Andre Agassi, champion in that edition, Pete sampras Y Chris Woodruff they could have been in the top eight.
