Swiss Stan Wawrinka, former world number 3 and winner of three Grand Slam, will participate in the ATP 250 Andalucía Open, which will be held from April 4 to 11 at the Puente Romano Beach Resort in Marbella (Málaga), according to the tournament organization.
Wawrinka, 35, has been the winner of the Australian Open in 2014, Roland Garros in 2015 and the US Open 2016 and has added a total of 16 ATP titles and an Olympic gold in Beijing 2008 together with his compatriot Roger Federer in the modality men’s doubles.
“I am very happy to be able to participate in the Andalucía Open. It is great news that with the current situation, new tournaments can go ahead and if it is in a place like Marbella even better, the conditions will be ideal to prepare the entire European tour of brick dust, “said the Swiss.
Stan Wawrinka reached his best position in the world ranking in 2014 with the number 3 position, closing three consecutive years in the Top 4 between 2014 and 2016.
In his almost twenty years of professional career he has achieved more than 500 victories, standing out as the only player to beat the Big 4 (Djokovic, Nadal, Federer and Murray) both in Grand Slam and on clay, a surface that he considers his favorite and on the that the Spanish tournament will be played.
The “signing” of Wawrinka for the Marbelí tournament joins that of the Italian Jannick Sinner, eliminated by Canadian Dennis Shapovalov on the first day of the Australian Open. Sinner, 19, recently won the second title of his career, the Great Ocean Road Open, in Melbourne.
