Daniil Medvedev assured that the favorite for the final of the Australian Open this Sunday will be Serbian Novak Djokovic due to the fact that he has won the eight finals he has played.
“I am the contender. I love playing against him, we have had very tight matches. He is one of the best tennis players in history but I want to win my first Grand Slam”, He added at the press conference after his victory in the semifinals against Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas by a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 and 7-5.
“The public has been on his side and I have become a little nervous because he did not play with the stands like that probably since last March. We will see on Sunday which side the spectators are on ”, he said after securing a place in the final of the major Australian for the first time.
“It’s good to know that I have that great streak against the Top 10. I remember that when I was among the top thirty I went through a period in which I had serious problems to beat these players ”, he admitted when he achieved his tenth consecutive victory regarding his matches against tennis players who occupy the top ten ATP positions.
Asked about the sanction for doping that weighs on his country and that will prevent athletes from competing under its flag in Tokyo 2020 + 1, Medveded said: “I am Russian and I do not understand why we cannot carry the flag or say where we come from at the Olympics. Tennis is an individual sport and it has nothing to do with all this ”.
