Sheriff: Tiger Woods 'wasn't drunk' during crash

The Los Angeles County Sheriff says Tiger Woods “was not drunk” during the rollover that seriously injured the golf superstar Tuesday, and said the car accident was “purely an accident.”

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said his department would not file any charges against Woods in connection with the accident near the Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes border, about 30 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.

Villanueva said the department considers it an accident, which could lead to a maximum misdemeanor.

“He wasn’t drunk,” Villanueva said Wednesday on Instagram Live. “We can dismiss that possibility.”

As part of a statement on Woods’ official Twitter account, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center’s Dr. Anish Mahajan said in part that Woods had suffered multiple “open fractures” to the lower part of his right leg, and a rod in your tibia and screws and pins inserted into your foot and ankle during emergency surgery.

Woods, 45, was “awake, responsive and recovering in his hospital room,” according to another part of the statement.

Associated Press contributed to this report.
