Fórmula 1

In the coming weeks, the entire paddock of the Formula 1 will depart for Bahrain to start the season 2021. However, everyone hopes that before this date the new racing schedule that would be implemented starting this year, as a test mode. The Grands Prix would be affected, causing a revolution in the paddock.

It will be the first time that the Formula 1 Grand Prix have the new ones on their weekend ‘sprint racing‘. This method is carried out in Formula 2, and is very different from the one that historically had the highest category. Not only would the qualifying and race dates be changed, but the sum of points would be completely modified.

What does it consist of?

Sprint races are short races, just over 50% of a normal Grand Prix. This would be carried out on Saturdays and would modify the sum of points for a weekend. Normally, a normal race gives 25 points to the winner, 18 to the second place and 15 to the one who closes the podium. However, this would not be the case in short races.

The new format would deliver half of the points, that is, 12.5 to the first, 9 to the second and 7.5 to whoever finishes in third place. On the other hand, the design of the weekend would be different. On Friday there would be a training session and a qualifying session to decide the start of Saturday’s test. The results of Saturday’s race will organize the start of Sunday’s GP, which will be as it is currently developing.

When it starts?

It is not yet confirmed if this modality will finally be carried out. However, this was already spoken by the leaders in the meeting who maintained the FIA Y Liberty Media Some months ago. According to his words, this will be announced in the coming days, before the start of the season. In principle, the test will be carried out in three circuits: Imola (April 18th), Canada (June 13) and Brazil (November 7).
