Pampering for Juan Martin del Potro. The Argentine was awarded the Konex Platinum Award for his outstanding tennis career during the 2010-2019 period.
The Tandilense, who is in the process of recovery after a surgical intervention on the patella in his right knee, continues to add achievements and recognition to his 32 years. The numbers speak for themselves: 22 titles at the ATP level, former number 3 in the world rankings, member of the Argentine team that is champion of the Davis Cup 2016, Silver Medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and Bronze medal in London 2012, winner of the US Open 2009 and the Masters 1000 of Indian Wells 2018. In addition, he has received numerous individual distinctions such as the Olimpia de Oro (2009 and 2016), Comeback of the Year- ATP World Tour Awards- in 2011 and 2016 and the Konex Award- Diploma of Merit as one of the 5 best tennis players of the last decade in Argentina in 2010 and 2020.
Throughout his career, del Potro not only had to battle against great players of the time such as Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. Injuries, perhaps, were the toughest opponent he had and, to this day, he has to overcome. The physical inconveniences were a karma over the years and the numbers in this item are also overwhelming: 7 were the times he had to go through an operating room to try to solve various ailments. Delpo, current number 167 in the world, remains inactive and out of the world circuit since he decided not to appear at his match for the second round of the Queen’s ATP 500 against Spanish Feliciano López.
From there, an operation in between and a treatment in Brazil based on cells from his bone marrow to recover the patella in his right knee. A few days ago, American tennis player Frances Tiafoe (62nd) declared: “I want to see del Potro on a court again.” I wish it so. Hopefully in 2021 we can see Juan Martín again on the tennis courts, healthy and competing against the best as he knew how to do (and very well).
