LIVERPOOL – The Liverpool thing begins to have no explanation. The still reigning Premier League champion added his sixth straight defeat at Anfield on Sunday against a relegation zone team like Fulham (0-1).
Jürgen Klopp surprised in the line-up, especially in defense, with Neco Williams, Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips, three homegrown players, and leaving Sadio Mané on the bench.
The experiment did not work out well for the German and the first half was controlled by Fulham, which on top of it went ahead at a critical moment, just before the break. Mohamed Salah, signaled in the team’s last defeat against Chelsea, got confused on the edge instead of clearing the ball, Mario Lemina stole the ball and nailed it to the strain of Alisson Becker’s post.
The goal served for Liverpool to wake up in the second half, but without creativity above and fixing everything to the centers of Trent Alexander-Arnold from the right. The clearest came in a shot from Diogo Jota that Areola saved and a header from Mané to the post, but Liverpool gave a very poor image against one of the candidates to be relegated from the Premier League this year.
It is Liverpool’s sixth consecutive defeat at Anfield in the Premier, in addition to having only scored one goal in their stadium in all of 2021. The ‘Reds’ are seventh, with 43 points, three from Europe and four from the Champions League. Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa can pass them on the table.
Fulham breathes a little with this victory and equals Brighton & Hove Albion at 26 points, which is in salvation, although the Cottagers have one game less.
