Pedri: "The first day I saw Messi I thought it was a lie"

The most important discovery of FC Barcelona in many years has a name and surname: Pedro González, better known as ‘Pedri’.

A boy who acquired the club and was on loan in Las Palmas, but for this season he joined the Barça discipline at the age of 17 and hardly anyone thought he would have minutes, much less that he would become a fundamental footballer in Ronald’s scheme Koeman, but, above all, in the partner that Lionel Messi needed.

“The truth is that I did not expect it at all. I was lucky that the coach of Las Palmas, Pepe Mel, was giving me minutes, but I come to a team as big as FC Barcelona and well, I was thinking about doing the preseason, and see if I could stay and continue working for to be able to have the maximum possible minutes. But what I am experiencing for me is a surprise ”, said the native of Tenerife in an interview with the magazine ‘Athlete’s Club‘.

“I SAW MESSI AND I THOUGHT IT WAS A LIE”

Pedri recently turned 18, but on the court he behaves like an adult, so he has unexpectedly become Messi’s best ally. They look for each other and understand each other as if they had been playing together for years.

“The first day I saw Messi I thought it was a lie… When I was next to Messi, I was very shocked when I saw him. From seeing it on television or in a video game … I almost didn’t believe it.

“Playing with Messi is easy because when you give it to him you know that things are going to happen. And that’s what I try to do, give it to him in the best conditions so that it is the most beneficial for the team.

“Hopefully I can be close to him for several years. It would be great if he could enjoy Messi and learn many things at his side, “he said.

POSITION AND SELECTION

Pedri received his first call-up to the Spanish national team this week, where, if he has to participate, he anticipates that “he would try to play as he did in the square of my town.”

The youth discover in which position he feels most comfortable and what he believes is his greatest virtue on the field.

“I have always said that the position where I have liked to play the most is that of midfielder. To be behind the striker, to be able to give that last pass that I like so much, that’s the position I would choose. But I’m here for what the coach says and to play in whatever position.

“I always try to be calm on the field… I always try to look before receiving the ball to see where my teammates are and see where the space can be.

“Those two things are what are always present in my head when it comes to receiving the ball and knowing where I am going to want to play it. I think it is one of my best virtues ”, added Pedri.
