Sergio perez is the man of the moment Formula 1. The Mexican almost left the category, after having achieved his first victory, in the Sakhir Grand Prix. The team Red bull rescued ‘Checo’, who after the dismissal of Racing point, he stayed with one of the best drivers on the grid. However, a few years ago, the energy drink brand did not trust him: «I didn’t have another chance ».
On the official Formula 1 podcast, ‘Beyond the Grid’, Pérez recalled the day he showed up to Red Bull’s young driver academy. There were great talents there, who would later reach the top category, such as Carlos Sainz, Jaime Alguersuari or Brendon hartley. The Mexican appeared in a test that did not give the expected results and causing rejection by Helmut Marko.
“We did it in 2007. But it didn’t go well because when I tried them, I didn’t do very well the first time,” Sergio Pérez told the Formula 1 podcast. The Mexican appeared at the Red Bull Junior Program, which has existed since 2001. Historic pilots were trained there. Sebastian Vettel, Christian Klien, Daniel Ricciardo Y Alex albon are other illustrious names.
However, not everything went well for Checo, in that test. «It was in a Formula 3. I had problems with the seat because my knee was hitting the steering wheel. That made me unable to find my time. I didn’t get another extra chance. It was all about your lap time, ”says Pérez, who asked for another test with Red Bull, a proposal that was rejected.
Pérez also recalled a moment he had with his now boss, Helmut Marko. The Red Bull advisor was surprised to see him among the cars competing in the British Formula 3 2007. The Mexican was the leader of the championship, and Marko looked at him and said: “We are going to beat you.” Ultimately, Checo did not win the title, but did have five victories in that year’s season.
